Wait, let me get this straight…we have to bypass the Australia exhibit every time we visit the Blank Park Zoo because my son thinks the peacock will attack him, yet he has no problem being face-to-face with a gorilla?

What a blast it was yesterday….and the kids were so well-behaved. They usually start having a meltdown if they don’t get a nap in around 12/12:30…yet, they powered through from 9:30-2ish with no problem. The ride back to Des Moines was quiet…and was nice, Jennifer and I actually got to listen to our music instead of hearing “Handy Manny’s Motorcycle Adventures” playing from the DVD player in the back.

Actually, I just told him we could have french fries for lunch. He was very happy with me.

Breaking Bad

For the past month…off air, Ken & Colleen are chatting non-stop about Breaking Bad. Colleen has been a fan for awhile…and Ken has been streaming it for about a month (I think he’s in season 4 right now).

Finally, I could take no more…it sounded too good.

Friday morning at 9:40, I signed up for Netflix.

Saturday morning at 11:25, I finished Season 1.

Yep, I’m hooked. Words can’t even begin to explain how much I’m enjoying this show. The final episodes start August 11th, so I have to get “crack”ing on this.

We thought we were headin’ home around 7ish or so…but then our kids got some sort of second wind, and they wanted to dance…and dance they did. Apparently, kids are born knowing how to do the Cha-Cha Slide.

There’s actually a game show that would easily be my #1…but I have no idea what it was called. I saw it while in Paris…it was in 1998…us drunk American students were about to embark on a night out…and this terrific game show delayed our night out by about an hour.

It was a game…but more like a chase. One contestant dressed as a bunny and took off on a Wipeout/Most Extreme Elimination Challenge-esque obstacle course….then another buzzer goes off…and this guy dressed like a wolf starts chasing the bunny contestant. That’s fun enough as it is…but just when it can’t get any better…

There’s a big slide at the end of the course…and down goes the bunny! Wheee! Right into this big, fenced-in area…on the other side…a carrot!! However, what’s between the slide & the carrot…a bull! Yes, a live bull. They have to out-manuever the bull!

And nobody did. It was crazy. The studio crowd was going nuts…the bull would just crush these “bunnies”…and then when the bull was corralled…the guy in the wolf costume would come over and start doing elbow drops on the bunny. It was insane!

I Think I’d Rather Listen to Creed Than This…

Okay, that’s not true…nothing could make me listen to Creed. Anyways…my wife was catching up on the Bachelorette last night, and by that, I mean, she was able to fast forward through the last two episodes in about an hour. It was quite impressive.

Somehow, I missed this…no, wait, I didn’t “miss” this…but this is the rap video that Desire, the bachelors, and the rapper Soulja Boy put together

What is this? Right reasons? Right reasons?

This is terrible…but darn it if for the rest of the night, whenever the opportunity presented itself, I would chant “right reasons, right reasons”.

Man of Steel opens today, and for some reason, I just have no excitement about it at all. It just looks way too heavy & serious for me. Plus, and I know full well that my 7-year old self would kick me in the butt for saying this…but I’m bored with Superman. He used to be my favorite superhero…but he’s just so…blah…now.

I loved watching Superman & Superman II…who didn’t? Who wasn’t terrified by Niagara Falls after seeing Superman? Plus, Zod & his henchmen was so imposing in #2 that I thought it was a perfect movie (going back to re-watch it later in life was a mistake)

Then…came Superman III….and it was awful…and it scared the heck out of me as a kid. No movie traumatized me more in terms of delivering pure terror…that end scene where the woman gets turned into the robot still sends shivers down my spine. I remember literally hiding behind the couch…cowering in fear. I think I might have cried too…it was terrifying.

Then came Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. What was that garbage? Why was he battling Lex Luger & Lex Luthor? 90s Wrestling fans got that reference…but seriously, nuclear dude was just awful.

Then came Superman Returns…with Norwalk’s very own Brandon Routh. The movie was just weird…wait, Superman disappeared for 5 years…and so did Clark Kent…and they both came back at the exact same time, and no one ever put it together? Lois Lane, all the Pulitzers you won should be taken back. I thought Brandon Routh was excellent as Superman, but thought the script/storyline was just a disaster.

Happy Father’s Day

This is why it’s hard to buy for us dads on Father’s Day. We don’t want anything. My wife keeps asking “What do you want? What do you want to do?” My answers are terrible…nothing, and just spend time with you & the kids. It makes gift-buying very difficult. This is all I want….(cue saying “awwwww” now)

Last night’s Game 1 Stanley Cup Final started a little after 7:00…and it ended at 12:02 this morning…and it was totally worth staying up for every second.

A triple overtime win by the Blackhawks? It was incredible. Selfishly, I would have preferred an easy 4-3 win in regulation, but where’s the fun in that?

By the numbers:

• 92 – Times I threw my arms up in the air (either out of excitement…or aggravation)
• 10 – Fingernails chewed off
• 3 – Toenails chewed off…I kid…it was only 2.
• 9 – Times I had to pick myself off the floor.
• 23 – Weird fist pumps/giant guitar swing arm manuevers I did after Shaw’s re-direct won it.

• 3 – Hours of sleep before my son woke up with a nightmare…and then I went to work.

I’m very interested to hear what our good friend Grae Drake (from Rottentomatoes.com) has to say about “Man of Steel”.

What’s not to like about a Superman movie, right?

I don’t know, I’m not sold. It looks too serious…Superman should be fun, and a little campy. From all the early reviews, it seems that this movie is very heavy, and even Zod seems too serious.

They should have given Brandon Routh another shot at Superman. Yes, Superman Returns was a train-wreck of a movie (as was Superman III & Superman IV: Quest for Peace)…but “Superman Returns” wasn’t Routh’s fault…it was just a bad concept.

So, it was finally summer yesterday, so I thought I’d take the kids to Raccoon River Beach. We had just bought some sand toys for them, so I thought for sure they would just love the idea of a gigantic sandbox.

I pick up the kids from daycare, and tell them both…alright, guys, it’s time to put on our Swimmers…and our swimsuits. Both protested loudly. I said, fine, let’s just go in our normal clothes.

We’re walking up to the beach…I’m thinkin’, I’m a great dad…behold all the sand. Then, my son, who apparently has a crush on the sandbox area of the playground over there at Raccoon River Park begins sprinting with his bucket to the smaller sandbox area. I try to show him the lake with all the sand on the beach…to which he responds “No daddy, sharks in water…I stay here”.

Darn it…I was hoping to go to the beach.

After 15 minutes in the smaller sandbox, I was able to convince/lie him that the sand wasn’t as hot by the beach.

Eventually, that worked….and then 20 minutes later, we were all brave enough to get our feet in the water…success!

Props to a group of guys in their early 20-somethings on being nice to my kids…while we were walking to the beach, one guy told Dexter that he liked his Cubs/Mickey Mouse hat…Dexter liked that. Then, about 10 minutes later, they were kicking a soccer ball around, and my daughter walked in their direction looking a tad interested in the ball…and one of them was nice enough to kick the ball to her…she kicked it, and then ran away of course. Incredibly nice.

I know I speak for many of us parents…when small stuff like that happens…we definitely notice, and we’re appreciative!

Oh, by the way, don’t tell your 2 year old son that you’re going to “Raccoon River Park”…he will ask “where are the raccoons?” at least a dozen times. By the way, if you run into him, they were all sleeping…always sleeping.

As a “Duck Father”

Mama Duck has taken up full residence in our backyard. She’s been on her eggs continously for the past two days. The hatching of eggs is definitely going to be happening sometime in the next week or so.

The Adam Emmenecker Sandwich Challenge

Well…next time you’re at the Waukee Jethro’s…look at the Wall of Shame…there’s a new member on the board. It was me…in depressing fashion.

4 years ago…I ate the whole sandwich & fries in about 18 minutes…so on Saturday night, at my buddy Corey’s bachelor party, I thought I’d give it a shot…and I…did not succeed.

It was a lot bigger than I remembered…I don’t remember the 1 lb of fries, and I did NOT remember the second pork tenderloin.

If you don’t know this sandwich…(I think they’ll send me a picture eventually)…but it’s 5 lbs of food….it’s a steak burger…with 2 pork tenderloins, 2 buffalo chicken tenders, 2-3 fried cheese thingees, brisket, bacon, all covered in cheese…and 1 lb of fries.

It’s a monster.

They set the timer at 15 minutes…and I dug in.

I went right after the tenderloin first (my least favorite part)…it was way too hot, burned my mouth, but I didn’t slow down…finished that, and went after the buffalo chicken tender…then the brisket, then the bacon…then the other tender…then the cheese…then some fries…then started on the burger. I was about 9 minutes in at this point…I was beginning to slow down…but I still had hope. Then I saw it, the “hidden” pork tenderloin.

It slapped me in the face. Any false sense of confidence that I still had immediately vanished. I tried putting it in my mouth…it fell out. So I went back to the burger…I could…not…swallow it. I attacked the fries…the fries won.

When I was done…I probably got around halfway through…and I was not feeling well.

Over the next two hours…I sat there…a “bit” uncomfortable…visited the restroom 3 times. Then, as the bachelor party began to head to the bars…I headed home. On the way home, I pulled over to the side of University…

…and puked….a lot…and I felt much better.

It was too much for me….but it is a delicious sandwich. I’d buy it again…and split it with 3 of my friends.You win Adam Emmenecker…you win.

Mama Duck

Mama Duck has returned to her nest in our backyard. She’s only there for about 3 hours everyday, but she’s definitely made the area behind our gutter her & her 7-8 eggs her new home. Mama Duck, we are happy to have you as our guests!
