Conductor Gerard Schwarz is world-renowned for his leadership at the Seattle Symphony and at Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival, and he has earned international acclaim for his more than 100 orchestral recordings. He was the first American to become Musical America’s Conductor of the Year, and he has received 13 Grammy Award nominations and two Emmy Awards. At the invitation of Joseph Giunta, he leads the Orchestra in Brahms’ sweeping Fourth Symphony. He is joined by his son, Julian Schwarz, first-place winner of the Alice and Eleonore Schoenfeld International String Competition, in Shostakovich’s impassioned First Cello Concerto – a unique father and son collaboration.

Go Beyond the Score and experience Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5 like never before in our sixth annual collaboration with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. This dramatic presentation begins with a riveting multimedia first half that takes you back in time to WWII in Soviet Russia. During the war, the Russian artist played a significant role in arousing a heroic, patriotic sentiment among his fellow countrymen. Prokofiev composed a majestic masterpiece to echo this emotion, a work that he himself described as “a hymn to free and happy Man, to his mighty powers, his pure and noble spirit.” The first half presents the story behind the music with dramatic visuals on a giant screen, plus four actors depicting Prokofiev, Soviet wartime officials, historians and other period characters.
