Like most people, you probably rethink things every so often. For me, that time comes at the beginning of a new year. I started mine by looking at ways to do things differently. To be better. Sure, there’s the “put my iPhone down when I get home so I can be with the kids more” and “lose a few pounds” kind of stuff, but – I also thought about my “work goals” and the radio station we both have in common: STAR 102.5.
Ever since I was a little kid growing up in San Diego, I’ve thought about working for a radio station. I started at STAR as an intern years ago, and have done just about every job here. One of favorites was actually being “on” the radio. There are a thousand reasons why I loved it. One of them was getting to talk to listeners. So, now – as the guy “in charge” of the station, I miss being able to pick up the phone and talk with you. That’s what I want to do here.
I want this to be a direct pipeline from you to me. Ask me anything you want – and I promise, I’ll answer. The answers won’t be canned responses. They’ll be honest – and from me – sitting in an office on Locust St. in downtown Des Moines. Here’s one I got a few weeks ago from a listener, asking me about a song we played:
“…should you really be playing Foster the People’s ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ after the school shooting in Newtown”
No, we shouldn’t…and it’s off the air TFN.
I’ll also plan to use this place to give you a heads up on concerts coming to town, fun things you can win, and an inside peek behind the scenes here at STAR. Like – when Colleen is ready to leave a meeting with me, she just stands up to signal – “This meeting is over, and it’s time for me to go.” It’s a fun place, with so much going on – way more than you hear on the air. I’m also a proud papa to two little girls (7 and 4), a husband, and an avid cook – so consider yourself warned.
I hope to post every week, maybe a bit more. Until next time…
