VIDEO: Ingrid Michaelson performs with Sandy Hook students

Folk singer Ingrid Michaelson has teamed up with students from tragedy-stricken Sandy Hook Elementary School to record a touching rendition of Over the Rainbow to raise money for charity.

Suspected gunman Adam Lanza opened fire at the Newtown, Connecticut school last month, killing 26 people in one of the worst shootings in recent American history.

Now students from across the district, some of whom lost their classmates in the massacre, have joined together to record the hopeful track in a bid to help heal their community.

Michaelson pitched in to lend her voice to the project, which is donating all its proceeds to the Newtown Youth Academy and United Way of Western Connecticut, and on Tuesday the group performed the soulful tune during an appearance on Good Morning America.

Explaining her decision to get involved, the star said, “Even if it makes these kids, who’ve been through so much, if it brings them an afternoon of joy and enjoyment, then that’s what I’ll do.” (MC/WNVGMA/MJ)
