Drew was playing basketball in 2008 when he hurt his leg. Initially, he thought he had just strained a muscle, but on February 5th he went to the doctor to get an x-ray and it was discovered then that he had a massive tumor. Dr. Buchwilder recommended that he have a biopsy and get the tumor removed immediately. When the tumor was diagnosed, it turned out to be Osteosarcoma which is a devastating cancer of the bone. He underwent chemotherapy treatments and ultimately elected to have surgery to rid him of his leg and replace it with a bionic leg that allowed him the ability be active like he was before he found out he had cancer.
The cancer wasn’t his only battle—Osteosarcoma is known for also creating tumors in the lungs and Drew has had four surgeries to help eliminate these. His last lung surgery was on Wednesday, May 23rd. Despite all of this, Drew has kept straight As in school and is currently a purple belt in Tai Kwan Do. He is also a very active golfer!
