Thank you to everyone who entered and to everyone who voted in Delta Dental of Iowa’s Home for the Holidays.
You can read both of the stories below.
Sandy Bacon:
My name is Sandy Bacon, and I would like to bring home my son’s boyfriend, Myles Gunn, who is stationed in Guam. Myles has never been to Iowa. Myles is serving his country in the military. I have seen for the last several months how hard working and driven he is. I have seen how devoted and loving he is to our son. Seth is planning on moving to Guam in February. After Myles’ military service is completed, I am hoping they will both consider Iowa home and move back. We are a large family with 8 kids, half adopted, half biological. Our son Seth moved to South Korea to teach last year right before Christmas. He met Myles shortly after moving to Korea. Myles has since been transferred and is now stationed in Guam. Seth is under contract to teach until December and will come home for Christmas. Myles has a couple weeks leave available in Jan but doesn’t have the money to come “home.” It would mean so much to our family to have Myles home for the holidays also.
Alicia’s Mom:
My name is Alicia Hall, and I would like to bring home my mom, Alicia McCarty, from Florida. She hasn’t been home in 20 years. My mom has remained a Drake Bulldog and Iowa Hawkeye fan for over 58 years – when she first came to Iowa, where she raised my brother and me. She has cared for neighbors, friends, and relatives in their lowest times, with providing home-cooked meals as her greatest trait. Over the years, she always welcomed international students into our home during the holidays when they couldn’t be home with their own families. This has always stuck with me. This would be the first Christmas that she will have ever with 2 of her youngest grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. It would be the ultimate family gift. (She has 6 grandchildren here and 3 great-grandchildren. She’ll be 80 in January).
