Kurt’s Blog: Christmas Songs…The Best, The Worst, and the Guilty Pleasures

Christmas music…is…great. Let’s just get it out there. It’s great…I know any question on Facebook that says “Do you like Christmas music?” results in a day-long debate, but I’ll settle it right here…it’s great.

The Best (AKA My Favorite) Christmas Songs

Santa Claus is Coming to Town – Jackson 5

It has to be the Jackson 5 version…more on that later…but this is great…and my kids love it. We belt this out.

Run Run Rudolph – Chuck Berry

Little St. Nick – Beach Boys

The classics…

Let It Snow

It’s Beginning to Look Like Christmas

and then, I’ll tell ya what…any Hawaiian version of any Christmas song works for me…especially, of course..

Really, any Christmas song by Bing Crosby is fantastic. Put Elvis’ “Blue Christmas” right up there too…done…that’s a playlist.

Worst (Least Favorite) Christmas Songs Ever…

Well, just like my favorite was Santa Claus is Coming to Town…so is my least favorite…and I can’t believe I’m going to write this…but I can’t stand the version by Bruce Springsteen.

Alright…shoot…as I watch this video, I’m wavering in my disdain for this version…how much fun did that look? Alright…here’s my issue with it…it’s the talking before it, it drives me nuts…live concert albums/versions are some of my favorite recordings ever, but I could do without the singer talking.

Okay…never mind…take this off my list of my least favorite…I’ve changed my mind.

What song have I changed my mind about?

This…

The only slightly tolerable version to me is the Dean Martin versions…but holy cow…this song grates on me like no other. Maybe it’s because I’ve seen too many karaoke acts do it…but the theatrics of it all, it just makes me gag. I’d rather drink egg nog (which is awful….AWFUL) than listen to this lump of coal.

Santa Baby….

12 Days of Christmas…

You’re both on the list for least favorite as well….12 Days is just too long…and people only like the “5 Golden Rings” part (credit Comedian Eddie Izzard for pointing that out). Santa Baby? Santa Baby is just nonsense….get it out of here.

Alright…my guiltiest of Christmas guilty pleasures…

Where Are You Christmas?

I’m not even sure if I even like this song….I mean, I love the Grinch…as this shows…

grinch

But do I like this song? I think I do…but I think I don’t…but I’ll tell you what, it gets stuck in my head on a daily basis come November and December. I don’t even know any of the words besides “Where Are You Christmas…Why Can’t I Find You?”  Then, I make up the rest of the words…like “You were right here….and now you are missing”. Those probably aren’t the correct lyrics.

It’s by far the guiltiest of my guilty Christmas song pleasures.

Also on the guilty pleasures list…and this is just ridiculous…

Ariana Grande’s  – Santa Tell Me.

Listen, I didn’t even know this song existed ’til last Christmas…but add it to the list!

Oh…and just for the record again…Christmas music is fantastic!
