Kurt’s Blog: I’m Undefeated as a Coach!

On Friday night, I had the honor of being an “Honorary Coach” for the Drake Bulldogs’ Womens Basketball team.

It was an incredible experience….

(Note: I made sure not to take any pics with Drake’s gameplan still up on the whiteboard)

Things didn’t go too well in the first half vs. the Salukis…but at halftime, Coach Baranczyk delivered an extremely motivated pep talk…so much so that I was ready to get out there and play (however due to NCAA rules…and the fact that I haven’t attempted a lay-up in 4 months), they decided to keep me on the bench as a coach.

The second half was one of the most exciting 20 minutes of basketball I had ever witnessed, and being there on the bench made it only even more exciting. Hearing the the game plan, which was astounding….considering me & my idiot friends can’t even run a 2-3 zone without messing it up….and then hearing the interactions between coaches & refs (who were not kind to us Bulldogs…I mean, when you hear a slap…that’s called a foul), it really was very exciting.

Drake came back with an amazing last-minute win, and it took every bit of self-control not to storm the court.

What coaching advice did I provide? Well, after pre-game warmups, I went into the locker room and mentioned to the women that during Southern Illinois’ pre-game layup drills, they tended to travel. Then, boom, first half…three traveling calls on SIU. Boom, I’m a genius…I did nothing.

Thank you so much to Coach Baranczyk, the Drake Women’s Basketball Team, Brenda, John, and everyone associated at Drake for allowing me this this opportunity.

I’m undefeated as a coach…so if some extra luck is needed, I’ll be there why my pearls of wisdom…as in…”Score more points”…”Get more rebounds”…”don’t let them score”.

Brilliant coaching on my part!

AWESOME is as AWESOME does!
