Kurt’s Blog: Kurt’s Omaha Vacation, Part 2

I absolutely love our family weekends in Omaha…so much to do…so close by. It wouldn’t be a summer without a family trip to Omaha…and one of our kids’ favorite places, the Henry Doorly Zoo.

The only word that can describe the Henry Doorly Zoo…is…AWESOME. There are so many animals to see…so much to do…and it’s going to be even more incredible when they’re done with their African Grasslands exhibits. While my son and I were on the Skyfari, I couldn’t believe all the changes, and what’s to come…is the Skyfari going to right over the lion exhibit? How fantastic is that?!!

Right off the bat, the kids run straight for the aquarium…my son has to see the spider crabs right away…and my daughter loves…LOVES…the penguins. She named just about every one of them..

Penguins is a big yes for my daughter…sharks? Perhaps not.

On the other hand, my son, being a typical 5-year old (or 38 year old dad), thinks sharks are just the coolest, and it’s fantastic that he/I are just less than 2 hours away from getting the chance to be up close with them.

Do you know what else I can’t believe is this close…

Elephants.

When we were headed over Omaha, my wife and I were talking about “When was the last time I had a seen in elephant in person”…and I think it was back in 2007 when my wife and I first met and we had our first “weekend away” in Omaha, and went to the Henry Doorly Zoo. That’s when we realized, holy cow, the kids have never seen a real-life elephant…and they loved ’em (hence the elephant stuffed animal my daughter picked out on the way out of the zoo).

One of my son’s favorite things to do? Stingray Beach. Oh, and I didn’t mean just “favorite things to do at Henry Doorly Zoo”, but “favorite things to do…ever”.

We must have spent a good half hour, maybe 40 minutes in there, and my son had his arm extended ready to brush the back of any stingray in his vicinity. “Dad, I petted 20 stingrays”…that might have been said more than twice on the way home. Such a cool experience!

I have about 250+ more photos on my phone I still need to get to…and probably could have taken 200 more.

A trip to the Henry Doorly Zoo is one of our favorite family trips…one that we do at least once a summer every year…and one that we’ll continue doing for so many more summers to come.
