Saturday…October 5th…Adventureland…5th Annual Oktoberfest…Best…Saturday…of…the…year.
I can’t wait…it’s still 10+ days out, yet here I am, going over the schedule they just released. (my wife loves this by the way…”Kurt’s agenda”…LOL)
Okay…tons of stuff going on all day starting at 11….and that doesn’t even include just general shenanigans and tomfoolery. Heavy on the tomfoolery.
Kurt’s schedule for Maximum Fun…
11:00ish – Come say hi to me, take a selfie with me…compare lederhosen. Drink a beer. If I’m not at the Star 102.5 tent, i’m running over to the big screen by the Sky Wheel…or the TVs at the Rathskeller to watch Iowa defeat Michigan.
12:00 – I pause working to walk over to the Main Stage by the Sky Wheel and watch Spin Doctors. What time is it? 4:30. Oh, don’t test me on “Pockets Full of Kryptonite”.
12:30 – Drink a beer. I just screamed out Spin Doctors song…throat…parched. thirsty. Plus Iowa just scored again…Hawkeyes up 17-3…I’m happy.
12:41 – See Mike Krantz of Adventureland…tell him “Hey, later on I’m going to pick you up and give you a hug”. Mike runs…I chase him.
1ish – Head over to Coors Light Stage…watch Pianopalooza feat. Tony Bohnenkamp. Talk with Tony about the woes of being bald…request Pearl Jam song. Be politely told by Tony “we’ll see what we can do”…translation: “Hey Kurt, pick a party song that people all want to hear ya idiot”.
1:15: Drink a beer…because it’s warm outside. Thirsty. Iowa up 24-10. Things are good.
1:30 – Sam Addams Saloon for Comedian Jon Reep. Dude is hilarious. We’ve had him on the show before…and he’s super funny, super nice. That’s a good combo.
2:00 – Drink a beer …thirsty from laughing.
2:30 – Iowa has now defeated Michigan…celebrate with beer.
2:35 – Realize, oh snap…Smashmouth is taking the Main Stage.
2:37 – Grab a beer for the walk…I mean, what if I get thirsty.
2:41 – Arrive for Smashmouth. Yell out songs. I’m fun to be around.
3:37 – Arrive a fashionable 7 minuted late for BS and the Liars at the Iowa Beer & Wine Stage. Brad Seidenfeld is awesome…good times to be had.
4:25 – Go get old-timey photos taken. Because, why not. Oh, and beer. Oh, and get in line for a ride. Preferably a trek on the Tornado. Work on perfect pose for the camera on the drop with my friend Brad (not Brad from previously mentioned).
5:20 – Arrive back to BS & the Liars…lie to Brad Seidenfeld that I watched the entire show. Loved that song 20 minutes ago Brad!
5:32 – Head over to mainstage…kick myself for missing the first half hour of B2Wins. Next 35 minutes enjoy B2Wins…dang they’re good.
5:45 – See Mike Krantz again…I sneak up slowly…like a puma sneaking up on his prey. Picking up and hug a success. Mike admonishes me for noticing my beer is nearly emtpy…tells me to remedy the situation.
5:48 – I follow Mike’s advice. Refill.
6:30ish maybe – it’s Adventureland Oktoberfest, my schedule of “things to do” is getting a little more than blurry..Stein holding contest. Watch Colleen attempt to do better than 35 seconds like last year.
7:00 – Ride Stormchaser with my wife…tradition!
7:30 – Pork Tornadoes on Main Stage…I’m now in fully “yelling songs” mode. Again…a delight to be around. My wife has found her friends a comfortable distance away from “yelling man”. Watch Pork Tornadoes sing 4 Non Blondes “What’s Up”…and realize, hey, when The Pork Tornados sing the song, I love it.
9:30 – Fireworks! Kiss wife.
Okay…all of this, and I’ve only scraped the surface of all the Adventureland Oktoberfest to be had fun that day!
I have eaten over 4000 calories on the day…I’ve had tasty tasty beers….I’ve taken 100+ photos…I’ve been asked “Where’s Ken?” 50 times….I’ve enjoyed meeting every single one of you. …and the day will once again go down as “Best Saturday in Central Iowa”.
