My kids think that I’m a pretty cool dad…they think me being on the radio is pretty great, but it never really hit them on how “cool” their dad was until yesterday.
On Monday, I posted a quick blog (“The 9″) about the best shows to binge on Netflix right now…and it was inspired by how much my wife and I were enjoying (enjoyed…we watched the entire season, and CAN NOT WAIT for Season 2)…”Everything Sucks”. It’s such a good show…so relatable for any of us that went through the fun of high school in the 90s, and even if you didn’t, you’ll really enjoy Everything Sucks as well…plus, if you didn’t live through that era, you’re going to be adding a lot of new songs to your playlist. (Spacehog has now been atop many of my playlists again).
This brings me into why my kids think I’m the coolest…I posted the Blog on Monday…posted it on Twitter, and boom…

That’s Peyton Kennedy….who plays Kate Messner on “Everything Sucks”…retweeting my post. She’s absolutely fantastic in Everything Sucks…and yes, there’s a now quite a few Tori Amos songs on my playlists as well.
No spoiler…but the bridge scene? Incredible…my wife and I did our best to pretend we weren’t tearing up.
Peyton Kennedy is also well-known in our house as “Dr. O” on “Odd Squad”. My 7-year old son & 6-year old daughter are superfans of Odd Squad. Seasons have been watched…binged…re-watched…they love it….especially my daughter, who if you asked right now, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” would reply “an Odd Squad Agent…I would work with Otto”.
So, I tell them last night, “Dr. O liked one of the posts dad put up on the Internet“.
Jaws dropped…
Forks dropped…
Questions began.
“Dad, what did she tell you?”
“Dad, did she tell you Odd Squad secrets”
“Dad, did she say ‘What’s Next’?
“Dad, did you tell her I wanted to be an Agent?”
“How do the travel tubes really work?”
“Did you ask her why Orchid calls everyone Sherman?”
“Why did she help Odd Todd in the Odd Squad games?”
It was a really fun dinner…and I only lied a little. I might have told my daughter that Dr. O had reached out to inquire when Priscilla would be available for agent interviews.
So, thank you Peyton Kennedy…thank you for being part of two great shows that my family have really, really enjoyed…and thanks for making me seem super-cool to my kids. (super-cool… a word that hasn’t been cool since high school in the 90s). In terms of coolness, I’m now approaching Ken Messner-esque levels!
