Was there anyone cooler than Prince? Probably not. Everything he did seemed cool…most of it didn’t make sense to me, but I knew that I liked it…and I knew that it was cool.
We all love Prince…we all have special memories from dancing at a party to a Prince song…or being somewhere and hearing a Prince song…or even going up to Minneapolis to see a show at First Avenue and knowing that was the home of “Purple Rain”.
It’s tough to come up with a Top 10 List of Prince songs based solely on “How awesome the song is”…so I’ve tried to come up with Top 10 list, and tie it to a memory that was just as great

- Purple Rain…Incredible song…but also…in junior high, they would place this once a school dance, and that poor girl was stuck slow dancing with you for 8+ minutes. Torture probably for them…but for me…I was a casa nova.
- When Doves Cry – The year was 1996…we were overcapacity at the Theta Chi house at Drake …throwing a party…someone turned this on…and everyone lost their mind…and went, well, see #4
- Kiss – Such a fun song…love it when it gets stuck in my head.
- Let’s Go Crazy – See #2. When we were banned from having parties in our living areas at the Theta Chi house…we moved to the basement, and this became an anthem for everyone to get a little turnt (note: “Turnt” wasn’t a word yet…but we knew how to do it)

- I Would Die 4 U – It was the guitar slide after the “I Would…Die 4…U….(slllllllidde). Loved it.
- P Control Such a great song to sing/yell while drunk. Nobody knew any of the words until the chorus.
- 7 . My wife was singing this walking around the house last night…and I’ve been singing it all morning. All 7 and we watch them fall…
- Get Off – I remember my mom being very concerned with the lyrics of this song…I told her it was just about “Stepping off”…but she was smarter than that.
- 1999 – This played at Millenium party in Chicago…at 11:57 on December 31st at a hotel bash my buddies and I were at. We had listened to that song hundreds of times…and in 3 minutes…it was going to get real.
- I Wanna Be Your Lover – The first Prince song I ever heard…and I didn’t get it…but now you hear it, and you can see the genius taking shape.
Oh, the Batman (1989) soundtrack…you know that I rocked the Batman hat…and listened to Batdance…and Partyman all the time.
Prince…you will be missed…thank you for all the music…all the songs that we could wrap memories around…and thank you for always being whoever you wanted to be.
