Kurt’s Blog: Remembering Kurt 20 Years Later

Like a majority of 16-year olds, I was big into Nirvana…and Kurt Cobain’s death on April 5th, 1994 was devastating. It was, for me, the first “celebrity” death. It seemed weird…we all were wearing the t-shirt featuring this image.

FASCINATING FACT:

Tomorrow marks the 20th anniversary of his death…can’t believe 20 years has gone by. To be honest, I’m shocked that Courtney Love has still survived (in terms of living…not career).

Frances Bean Cobain

Also shocking is Kurt’s daughter, Frances Bean, is now, what, 22? She definitely has Kurt’s face…it’s pretty crazy to me. I think we call figured that one day she’d be all over the tabloids, but she’s maintained a pretty low profile.

One of my biggest regrets is not seeing Nirvana in concert…

I remember many of my friends in 1994 were adamant that you couldn’t be big fans of both Pearl Jam & Nirvana. That was stupid. Of course you could.

Today, I will subject my kids to a listening of “Smells Like Teen Spirit”….which I know they won’t like (mainly because they don’t sing that on Jake & the Neverland Pirates). I look forward to that…when my son looks at me and says “Daddy, I don’t like that”…it’ll all come full circle, because I remember my dad saying the same thing to me when I blared it back in 1993.

I remember at a school dance in 1992…8th grade…it was a bunch of Bobby Brown, MC Hammer, Michael Jackson…then someone got the DJ to play “Smells Like Teen Spirit”…it only played for 2 minutes before chaperones shut it off…not going to lie….200 8th graders lost their minds for those 2 minutes. It was AWESOME.

I’m so tired of the phrase “Selfie to End All Selfies“…Every selfie is not the “Selfie to End All Selfies”. First it was Ellen and all the celebs at the Oscars…then Kimmel with the Clintons…now, the “Selfie to End All Selfies” is Bill Murray, Lady Gaga, and Letterman. No, not it’s not.

Speaking of selfies…hey look, it’s me eating pizza while Eric Hutchinson is performing in the background. (and yes…Hutch-heads…he’s AWESOME)

By the way, I used a word I swore I never would use…but I used it…and I meant it…”playdate“. Yep…one of those might be in the works for the kids.

So long to David Letterman...I always thought his interviews were fantastic. There are have been some rumors out there who might replace him…Neil Patrick Harris, Tina Fey…even Tim Tebow? Tim Tebow would be terrible.

Our good friend Grae Drake of RottenTomatoes.com says “Captain America: Winter Soldier” is inexplicably good. Can’t wait to see it.

By the way…Mediacom subscribers…today begins a free HBO weekend….so set the DVRs. I’m recording 5 things today already.

My wife and I really want to watch “Wolf of Wall Street” this weekend…but holy cow does that 179-minute run-time seem daunting.

AWESOME is as AWESOME does!

‘Scary Movie’ tops box office, slaying ‘Masters of the Universe’ and adding to low-budget streak

The summer box office is booming — but not because of the usual suspects. After three weeks of indie horror dominance at the box office, the slasher spoof "Scary Movie" topped ticket sales with $55 million over the weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday, easily besting the far-from-mighty "Masters of the Universe."

Carolina trails Vegas in the Stanley Cup Final and has a big decision to make for Game 4

A sequence of events in a Stanley Cup Final that has gotten crazier by the minute has put the Carolina Hurricanes at a crossroads. They blew a two-goal lead and lost Game 1, erased a two-goal deficit and won Game 2, and rallied from down four goals in Game 3, only to lose in double overtime on a fluky bounce.
