When it comes to gardening, I admit, I have no idea what I’m doing. I just plant a bunch of stuff, hope it grows, but would still be very wary of whatever I grew. My wife & kids though…no fear…if it’s in our garden, and it looks ripe, they’ll just pick it right off and pop it in their mouth. They’re very brave. I wouldn’t trust my gardening skills enough to do that.
For the 4 or 5 years we’ve had a garden…we’ve grown tomatoes…cucumbers…carrots…but what I’ve always wanted to grow, is hot peppers…Anaheim Diablo Red Peppers.
The thing is…for the 4 or 5 years we’ve had a garden, I’ve planted them….and they’ve grown…but they never turn red. I see them on their little vine, and I keep thinking, what the hell? Why aren’t you turning red?
When the end of summer hits, I stare my green, stupid little peppers…get irritated that they never ripened, and into the brown yard waste bin they go.
Try again next year…same stupid thing…and then the next year. I refused to give up….then this year happened…and it happened again….and I decided to give up.
However…this year, it was my wife that tore out the garden….and instead of throwing away those stupid Anaheim Diablo Red Peppers….she put them on a plate in the kitchen.
I saw them…and said “We can just throw those away…they never ripened…and I’m done with them”…she looked at me,…confused…and laughed. I know…I’m a terrible gardener…and went and did something else.
But then…BUT THEN….Something happened…something that no one had ever told me…something that my wife obviously knew…and probably at least half-expected me to Google at one point in the past 4 years “why aren’t my peppers turning red?”…but I never had…so this was a MIRACLE.
Over the weekend…my stupid little green runt of a pepper patch…turned…red! SUCCESS!
No one told me that they turn red after! MIRACLE!!
Spoiler alert: I think my wife will be in charge of the garden next year…and the kids will be second in charge. I will only be in charge of getting more dirt. I can handle dirt. I think I can handle dirt. I’m probably not handling dirt the right way either.
Oh, and absolutely I ate it straight up….and yes…it hurt…and I loved it. Now, I can’t wait for the other 20 to turn red!
