Kurt’s Blog: The Big Chip Review

Truly, a picture of fine health, ha!

As I mentioned last week, I was probably too-overly-excited to see that Lays Potato Chips were releasing three new flavors. I, of course, had to try them.

I made 2 trips, both to HyVee & Target with no luck (they have them now), but ended up finding the chips (with credit to you who read the Blog for pointing me in the right direction) at the Walmart on 8th Street/73rd Street (whichever you prefer).

My plan was just to get the Chicken & Waffles…and the Sriracha flavor…but I didn’t want the Cheesy Garlic Bread to feel left out.

Here’s my conclusion…I have none…but I did many studies…and here they are.

Chicken & Waffles:

My first bite…it tasted just like a syrup-covered waffle, and it was tremendous. Then it tapered away to a saltiness, and then an attempt at fried chicken flavor. It wasn’t bad by any stretch, I just didn’t get what I was expecting (but I don’t know if that’s a bad thing or not yet).

The issue I have is that there is no consistency in the chips. Each one is very different…one seems to be all syrupy waffle goodness…another is all chicken…another is a combo. It’s tough to know what you’re getting.

Eating one chip at the time: Very good flavor, but like I said, no idea what to expect in each one.

Handful of chips at one time: Strong combo of all of them. I suggest that this is the way to enjoy these chips.

Dipping sauce experiment: Not done.

Kids: Kids really enjoyed them.

Wife: Thought they were “different”…went back for a small handful of additional chips. Didn’t go back after that.

Me: Eating them…enjoying them…would I recommend them? Yes. At least once. You have to try them at least once.

Sriracha Flavor

This was the flavor I was most looking forward to was Sriracha Flavored.

It was only a few short years ago that I began enjoying Sriracha sauce…and just a few drops would cause my mouth to erupt in flames…now, though, I’ve developed an immunity to it or something. I can pretty much drink it straight…but don’t ask me to…I learned my lesson from the last time I tried that. It was a looooooonnnnnnnng night.

I jumped into this bag…and, to be honest, at first, in the words of Kevin Sorbo…

That might be a gross overstatement, but I just love that clip so much (NOTE: For those seeing that for the first time…he was supposed to act disappointed, but got confused on the cue cards, and yelled “Disappointed!”)

It was because I had one chip first…and it didn’t seem to much flavor at all. I tried a big handful, and Boom…there it was. Sriracha flavor…sort of. It was there, but it was muted. I was hoping for a flaming hot chip….I got a tasty chip, but not much spice.

I wanted this chip to wow me…and wasn’t wowwed.

However, I found that dipping this chip into actual Sriracha sauce is fantastic, and one of my new favorite things.

Reminder to self: Out of Sriracha sauce…buy more.

Eating one chip at the time: Sort of bland

Handful of chips at one time: The only way to eat this chip…you’ll be much happier.

Dipping sauce experiment: With Sriracha sauce = AWESOME.

Kids: Did not let them try it…as Dexter would say “Too Bicy” (too spicy)

Wife: Not much of a reaction…is she not as passionate about this experiment as I am? Does she actually focus on important things? Interesting.

Me: Eating them…enjoying them…would I recommend them? Not sure. If you were looking for the one flavor of these three to try, I wouldn’t put this one first.

Cheesy Garlic Bread Flavor

This is was the chip that I wasn’t really expecting to even try, and to be honest, I think this is the one that I like the most. I did find that this one gave me the worst breath of the three though.

Excellent garlic flavor…good cheese content. Good chip. I need more things garlic….garlic salsa…nom nom nom nom. Sorry, I got off course there.

Eating one chip at the time: Excellent flavor

Handful of chips at one time: Cheesy, garlic explosion.

Dipping sauce experiment: Dipped in blue cheese…didn’t turn out the way I had hoped.

Kids: Devoured them.

Wife: Thought that these were the best of the three

Me: Eating them…enjoying them…would I recommend them? Yes. Bring a breath mint for afterwards.

REVELATION at 6:05 this morning…mix Sriracha flavor with the Cheesy Garlic Bread flavor. Sriracha & Garlic = perfection!

Dear Bachelor,

So that tense scene between Sean & Desirae’s “former lover” that you teased us with all season…was just a fake? Booooooo. As they kept teasing it throughout the night, my wife began talking about how it looked like it was totally staged and scripted. She was right. Well done Jennifer.

Booooo.

Tomorrow, I will tell you about the place that intimidates me the most (and it’s not Palmers Deli, although I get very confused and intimidated there as well, ha ha).
AWESOME is as AWESOME does!
