Kurt’s Blog: There’s No Need To Keep Making Music

While running yesterday, I was listening to my “Guilty Pleasures” playlist…and yes, it’s just as terrible as you would think. While I was on the treadmill…it dawned on me on how many of these songs were “The Best Song Ever” (except for Pearl Jam’s “Alive”…always #1…always the best song ever).

These “Best Song Evers” were made in haste…and some made while I was still a young music-ling.

Yes…these are the songs that at one point made me think…

“ALRIGHT…YOU CAN STOP MAKING MUSIC…THIS IS THE BEST IT’S EVER GOING TO BE”

(Note: As wrong as I was about these songs…it’s not like my friend Dan…who at one point said “Lou Bega is the future of music”. 2 years later, I confronted Dan on on this accusation…and his response was “Time Will Tell.” Umm…time has told.

These are the 8 Songs…

Hammer’s “Too Legit to Quit”

The hand gestures…the HEY…HEYYYYYY….sweet sassy molassey…this song/video was EVERYTHING to me (for way too long). There may or may not be home videos of family vacations where all I did was do the 2 Legit 2 Quit motions.

Kenny Loggin’s “Danger Zone”

I remember my dad taking me to see “Top Gun”…and when I heard this song for the first time, the only thought I had was…yes…I’m ready to listen to popular music. Kenny Loggins has to be the coolest music artist ever…although at the time (keep in mind I was only 8 or 9)…I was getting Kenny Loggins and Kenny Rogers confused.

C & C Music Factory’s “Everybody Dance Now”

I feel like Freedom Williams should still be belting out songs. When this came on during 7th/8th grade school dances, you knew the night was going to be awesome.

Onyx’s “Slam”

Had no idea what they were saying, but the song spoke to me.

Phish’s “Bouncin’ Round the Room”

I blame this on being under the influence at Drake for this one. Dance song…dance song…copious amounts of drinking…Phish…and we all jump around the room. Totally plausible….totally happened every night at the fraternity house.

Len’s “Steal My Sunshine”

I’m too embarrassed to defend myself on this one. This is terrible…but for 3 months…BEST SONG EVER.

Dave Matthews Band’s “Two Step”

The opening 40 seconds of this song…the build-up…my goodness…gave me chills. Again, I blame college & alcohol…and being a Dave Matthews Band mega-fan at the time. I might have said this one time at a DMB concert “Were you there at Alpine Valley when Dave did Two Step? Boyd was on fire”.

Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing”

This was the most romantic…epic…powerful song I had ever heard. I was wrong…I repeat…I was wrong. This was the song I was going to marry my wife to. Luckily…my wife had better ideas.

Note: There are 5 songs on this list that I never, ever want to hear again…but I will not disclose that…because that means there are 3 songs that I do want to hear forever. Awesome.

‘Scary Movie’ tops box office, slaying ‘Masters of the Universe’ and adding to low-budget streak

The summer box office is booming — but not because of the usual suspects. After three weeks of indie horror dominance at the box office, the slasher spoof "Scary Movie" topped ticket sales with $55 million over the weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday, easily besting the far-from-mighty "Masters of the Universe."

Carolina trails Vegas in the Stanley Cup Final and has a big decision to make for Game 4

A sequence of events in a Stanley Cup Final that has gotten crazier by the minute has put the Carolina Hurricanes at a crossroads. They blew a two-goal lead and lost Game 1, erased a two-goal deficit and won Game 2, and rallied from down four goals in Game 3, only to lose in double overtime on a fluky bounce.
