Kurt’s Blog: What I Learned At Adventureland on Sunday

It’s been an AWESOME past 10 days…spent a week-long family vacation in Winter Park, Colorado, and did everything possible….and then on Sunday, our son Dexter turned 4….and where did he want to go for his birthday? Adventureland!…and it was AWESOME!

We got there at opening….and didn’t leave ’til nearly 6! It was great…I thought it was only like 2:00, but nope, it was 5:30. Kids had a blast, Jennifer, my brother-in-law Michael, and I all had a blast too.

Here’s what I learned at Adventureland yesterday:

  • SkyRide…your dolls terrify me to my very core. Welcome to the ride.

That being said…my kids love the Skyride…I think we rode it 4 times yesterday. That’s the nice part about going to Colorado for a week….two weeks ago, we would never have even considered taking our kids on a ski lift…but when that’s the only way to the top of the Alpine Slide…you brave it…and when you realize that your kids love it, you do it again…and soon enough, you’re on every ski lift ride out there, ha ha.

  • I learned that my wife will trick me (this I already knew of course). While I got the kids in line for the airplane ride, Jennifer and my brother-in-law said that they were going to wait by the exit…instead, I see them quickly scurrying over to the Sky Shot. Hmm….interesting. Enjoy your ride.
  • I learned that people will have different reactions to being stuck in a roller coaster seat. One gentleman was stuck in his seat…the bar didn’t come up. He was in there for about a minute or so, and afterwards laughed it off and gave the attendant a high five. On the Tornado, this other guy’s bar was stuck down for maybe 90 seconds, and he was ticked…t-i-c-k-e-d. No smile…just heavy footsteps down the walkway. That’s when you take a selfie!
  • Oh…I learned this…Adventureland Bay….is AWESOME. Even more capital letters are needed to describe the greatness. My wife and I want to celebrate our anniversary in a few weeks here!

  • We learned that Dexter is one centimeter over 42″ tall…so he can ride the big-kid rides.

  • I learned my flip flop of choice for the day was not meant for all day fun.
  • I learned that while riding the kid flying dragon ride…that if I sit on the inside, I will eventually slide out far enough that my daughter will say “Dad, you’re squishing me”. Stupid hips.
  • When given the opportunity to hold a baby kangaroo…you always take it.

  •  It’s a trap! That’s what they should put on the Balloon Race ride. My kids saw it…and they were so excited. I had never seen it in action before, so we hopped aboard. My wife, fresh off buying a lemonade, saw us get on, and she hopped aboard too. We thought it would be this little fun ride, ala the airplane/biplane kiddie ride. IT WAS NOT. We knew we were in trouble right away…both my wife & I hate rides where you spin….my kids are immune to dizziness apparently.

The ride started…and it immediately begins whipping you around…at what I can only assume Silly Silo-esque-like speeds. The kids got off and ran off to the next ride…Jennifer and I stumbled out and had to lean on the railing for a few moments. Ridiculous. It’s a trap!

Bottom line… (like many things)…I have found that heading to Adventureland with my family is more fun than I could have possibly imagined.

AWESOME is as AWESOME does!
