Adventureland announces new roller coaster, removal of old favorite

It’s a sad day for long-time visitors to Adventureland in Altoona. Today, the park announced that after a 40-year run, the famous “Log Ride,” also known as the “Log Flume,” will be torn down after Labor Day Weekend. The good news is that the removal of the park staple will make way for a new steel roller coaster called “The Monster.” This will be a first of it’s kind roller coaster at Adventureland. It will bring the park up to speed with other amusement parks in the region that have modern steel roller coasters.

According to Adventureland, the new roller coaster will feature more than 2,500 feet of steel track, 133 foot vertical lift hill, 5 inversions, a 101 degree first drop, and 10 (in the park’s words) “airtime” moments. It will cross the park’s existing Sky Ride 8 times and boasts the first negative-G stall loop in the western hemisphere. You can watch a digital rendering of the new roller coaster above.

Adventureland had this to say about the removal of The Log Ride:

“The Log Ride has been a park staple for decades – tens of thousands of photos, screams and splashdowns have been had on this ride, but all great things must eventually come to an end. We know that this was a fan (and personal!) favorite, but we want it to go out on it’s own terms. We encourage all of our fans to take advantage of this advance knowledge and get in your last ride. The Log Ride is over 40 years old, and while still structurally sound, technology for rides has advanced by leaps and bounds in that time period. It is requiring an enormous amount of upkeep and maintenance that isn’t feasible long term.”

“The Monster” is scheduled for completion and first rides in June of 2016.
